Merino Wool Underwear for Men: Why Merino Boxers Beat Cotton
Merino wool underwear is the most comfortable upgrade most men never think about. Boxers sit against the skin from morning to night, so the fabric matters more there than anywhere else. Merino boxers stay drier than cotton, resist odor for longer than synthetics and feel soft without itch. Here is how they work, how they compare with cotton and synthetic underwear, how to pick a size and how to wash them.

Why is merino wool underwear better than cotton?
- It stays drier. Merino moves moisture away from the skin as vapor. Cotton absorbs sweat and stays damp, which is what causes chafing on long days.
- It resists odor. A pair stays fresh through a long flight, a long shift or a day on the trail. Synthetic underwear often smells after one wear.
- It regulates temperature. The same pair works under thermals in January and on its own in July, with no clammy feeling in winter and less overheating in summer.
- It stretches and recovers. Merino fiber has a natural crimp, so the boxers keep their shape and stay soft and elastic.
- It reduces static. Useful in dry winter air, when synthetic underwear clings to everything.
Does merino wool underwear itch?
No. Itch comes from thick, coarse wool fibers. We use 17.5 micron Australian merino, fine enough to bend against the skin instead of pricking it. If wool has itched you before, it was a coarser wool, not merino.
What weight are merino boxers?
Our men's boxers are knit at 190 GSM (grams per square meter). It is a midweight fabric: substantial enough to keep its shape all day, light enough to wear year-round and under a base layer in winter. Our merino GSM guide explains how weight affects warmth.

Boxers or boxer briefs?
Both are in the men's merino underwear collection, in single pairs and 2-packs. Choose by how you wear them:
- Merino boxer briefs, like the Men's Merino Boxers 190 Brief Forest Green, for everyday wear, sports and hiking.
- Merino boxers, like the Men's Merino Boxers 190 Charcoal Grey, for a classic cut. The Black 2-pack is the easy way to stock up.
What size merino boxers should I buy?
Measure around your waist where the waistband will sit, then match it to the chart:
| Size | Waist (in) | Waist (cm) |
|---|---|---|
| S | 32–34 | 81–86 |
| M | 35–37 | 89–94 |
| L | 38–40 | 96–102 |
| XL | 41–44 | 104–112 |
| XXL | 45–47 | 114–119 |
If you are between sizes, size up for all-day comfort and down for a closer fit during sport.

Who notices the difference first?
Travelers, because merino stays fresh through long flights and the carry-on packs lighter. People who work outdoors or on their feet, because chafing comes from damp fabric. And anyone layering for cold, because the layer closest to the skin decides whether the whole system breathes. For travel packing ideas, see our merino clothing guide for travel and sport.
How do you wash merino wool boxers?
- Turn them inside out.
- Machine wash cold (no warmer than 86°F / 30°C) on a gentle cycle with similar colors.
- Use a mild or wool-specific detergent.
- Lay flat to dry. Skip the dryer: heat is what shrinks wool.
- No fabric softener and no bleach.
Because merino resists odor, you will wash it less often than cotton. Read the full guide on how to wash merino wool without shrinking it.
FAQ
Is merino wool underwear worth it?
For most men, yes. It stays drier, resists odor, does not itch and lasts for years with cold washing, so one pair does the work of several cotton ones.
Are merino boxers too warm for summer?
No. Merino regulates temperature and moves moisture away, so a 190 GSM boxer feels drier and cooler than cotton in the heat.
How long does merino underwear stay fresh?
Much longer than cotton or synthetic, which helps on long flights, long shifts and trips where laundry is hard. For everyday wear, we still recommend washing underwear after each wear.
Do merino boxers shrink?
Only with heat. Cold water, a gentle cycle and flat drying keep them in shape.
